pH and Volcanoes

Opening Activity

Put out trays of baking soda with containers of vinegar with food color and transfer pipettes. Kids make colorful fizzing reactions on trays.

Main Activity

Make a better volcano. Determine pH of various kitchen chemicals using Red Cabbage juice and litmus paper. Combine kitchen chemicals with baking soda to determine which produces the biggest volcano effect.

Side Activity

Put baking soda into a balloon, put over bottle with vinegar. Watch balloon inflate when baking soda is upended into bottle.

 Vinegar in bottle, balloon with baking soda attached. Baking soda is funneled into bottle and interacts with vinegar to produce CO2, which fills the balloon.
